{"id":17472,"date":"2011-04-08T07:58:36","date_gmt":"2011-04-08T07:58:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.svalbardblues.com\/svalbard\/klima-og-lysforhold\/"},"modified":"2011-04-08T07:58:36","modified_gmt":"2011-04-08T07:58:36","slug":"klima-og-lysforhold","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.svalbardblues.com\/en\/svalbard\/klima-og-lysforhold\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate and light conditions on Svalbard"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Climate and light<\/h2>\n<p><a title=\"Svalbard\" href=\"https:\/\/www.svalbardblues.com\/en\/svalbard\/\">Svalbard<\/a>&#8216;s location in high Arctic affects both climate and light conditions.<span id=\"transmark\" style=\"width: 0px;height: 0px\"><\/span> The annual average temperature is minus four degrees, and the midnight sun and dark season <span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">characterize the year.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">Although the average annual temperature is below zero, Svalbard has a mild climate compared to other areas of the same latitude.<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">In January, the average temperature is -16 \u00b0 C and in July it is + 6 \u00b0 C.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Varied climate<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">There are major climatic differences between the different parts of the archipelago.<\/span> <span title=\"\">The warmest and humid climate is on the west coast of Spitsbergen. <span class=\"\" title=\"\">The relatively high temperatures in this area are due, among other things, to the mild air currents coming from the south, and the Gulf Stream transporting warm sea water up the west coast all year round.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Unpredictable weather<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">The weather in Svalbard is very changing.<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">This is mainly because the large amount of water and warm air transported from the south meets colder water and air from the polar regions.<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">This creates high temperature contrasts and high winds.<\/span> <span class=\"\" title=\"\">However, there is no more than 190 mm of precipitation on average per year (Longyearbyen), and it is therefore common to characterize Svalbard as Arctic desert.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Sunlight<\/h2>\n<p>Midnight sun and dark season are the main features of the year. In\u00a0<a title=\"Longyearbyen\" href=\"https:\/\/www.svalbardblues.com\/en\/about-longyearbyen\/\">Longyearbyen<\/a>, the midnight sun lasts from april 20th to August 23rd. <span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"\" title=\"\">In the middle of summer, the sun in Longyearbyen stands about 35\u00b0 above the horizon during the day and 11\u00b0 at night. In Longyearbyen, it is dusk and darkness several months a year. The dark season is when the sun goes below the horizon, and it lasts from October 26th to February 16th in Longyearbyen.The polar night is defined by a complete darkness, with the sun being more than 6\u00b0 below the horizon. In Longyearbyen, the polar night lasts from November 11th to January 30th.
