The duplicator they had was well-used, and during the war it was used to print the illegal newspaper “Fri fagbevegelse” in Oslo.

1950/51

– Editor: Alf Sørensen

– pin-up girls who were drawn

– interviews

– announcements, events, and foreign policy news

1951/52

– Editor: Arne Aulie

– The newspaper did not come out due to a paper shortage. In his post-season report, Auli writes: “On the day of my arrival, I checked the welfare office’s supplies for the winter season. There was practically nothing in the way of materials for study work, etc., and when I learned at the same time that the welfare office was to publish a weekly newspaper, the plans for the winter seemed impossible. I immediately ordered the necessary materials, but the last boat had already departed from Norway. The final result was that the plane this fall brought some paper for the Svalbard Post. It was destroyed during unloading, and we had to face a season with practically no resources or materials. The draft of the first issue of Svalbardposten had been prepared, but even with the kind assistance of the parish priest and the office, several attempts showed that the collected paper was unusable. It is added that Aulie’s predecessor, Alf Sørensen, had noted in his report that the paper had been used up. The Norwegian Confederation of Trade Unions (LO) has reviewed the case and concluded that the Welfare Council has acted in such a way that legal action should be considered. (Hansen later received 23,000 kroner from the Svalbard Council, but it is unclear whether this was some form of compensation for his dismissal.)

1976/77:

– Editor: Bjørn Hansen, followed by Otto Risanger starting with issue No. 9

– No major issues, but the SP’s “most left-wing” class?

– a lot about the mining bus and “ordinary working people” — little about management

– two May Day events in 1977

– the AKP and the AP/Lyb. Risanger explains:

– He was the editor, with Lilleba Knudsen serving as secretary

– To include photos in the newspaper, they had to apply a screen over the images and expose them for a long time. Store Norske launched a company newsletter and purchased repro masters, which they were allowed to borrow

– Typed on a typewriter

– We almost had a total printing disaster with the first issue. I happened to run into Ragnar Asbjørn Larsen (who was originally a printer) before printing began, and asked him to come inside to check if everything looked okay before printing. It wasn’t okay at all, and Larsen prevented a disaster.

1978/79:

– Editor: Kristian Hus

– Starting with this first issue, SP has switched to being a Friday paper! It used to be published on Saturdays

– small newspapers; the first issue had only 10 pages

– In May, two issues were published in tabloid format! This was due to technical problems and staff illness. The idea of switching to tabloid format in Tromsø had been discussed on several previous occasions, and the newspaper’s board agreed to a trial project. This lasted for only two issues, after which the paper returned to the old format.

– The tabloid format caused a great deal of irritation and dissatisfaction: It was impractical to file in a ring binder for those who collected the newspaper! This was also discussed in the SR. There, one representative went so far as to request that the two tabloid-sized issues be reprinted in A4 format afterward, so that everyone could get a copy. (This was estimated to cost 10,000 kroner.)

– The relationship between Hus and SR isn’t particularly good. He is frustrated by their unwillingness to look ahead and discuss the newspaper’s problems. In his latest issue, he says that unless SR improves conditions, the turnover in the editorial staff will only continue.

1979/80:

– Editor: Kjetil Anthonsen

– Helicopter crash: Pastor Kjell loses an eye. The board has been discussing switching to mainland printing for some time, and it is decided to move forward with these plans. It is decided to purchase new computer equipment and prepare the newspaper for electronic transmission to the printing plant. Until the New Year, however, finished pages (paste-ups) must be sent by plane to Tromsø.

1996:

– Editor: Kjetil Anhonsen

– Since early this year, the finished newspaper has been sent to the printer via an ISDN line. Printing on the mainland entails higher costs for printing and postage, but at the same time provides far better image and print quality and reduces labor costs. The editorial staff no longer has to worry about printing or equipment, and darkroom work is eliminated. Films are now developed at an hourly lab, and the negatives are scanned directly. Color images are gradually becoming a common sight in the newspaper.

– The newspaper is being reorganized into a limited liability company. This is because limited liability company status is required to receive press subsidies. There is one share in the company with a par value of 500,000 kroner.
