Baskery (SE)

Expect “banjo punk,” “newfolk,” Nordicana, and an energetic live show when the three Bondesson sisters—Greta (banjo/guitars/drums/vocals), Stella (double bass/vocals), and Sunniva (electric guitar/acoustic guitar/vocals), turn the music on its head. The trio blends punk’s fearless expression with the subtlety and finesse of the singer-songwriter tradition. As an extra treat for Dark Season Blues, they’re also bringing along their father, Janåke (drums/vocals/harmonica). Together, they are the Slaptones, who have been going strong since 1999. The band released two albums in 2003 and 2004. After a hiatus of many years, they’ve now been revived to entertain the Svalbard audience with rockabilly (see separate article).

Since their debut in 2006, Baskery has released five albums and toured around the world. No matter where the Swedish sisters perform, an enthralled audience says they’ve never heard or seen anything like it. Baskery performs with what seems like boundless energy. The trio has been handpicked to open for artists such as Gary Clark Jr., Robbie Williams, and Brandi Carlile, and has performed at a wide range of Swedish and international festivals, from Sweden’s Peace and Love to Denmark’s Tønder Festival, the UK’s Glastonbury, the U.S.’s SXSW, and the Calgary Folk Festival in Canada.

Baskery’s latest original album, *V: End of the Bloodline*, recorded in the English countryside, was released in 2023. On “The Young Sessions – Live to Tape” (2024), Baskery covers eleven songs by their great source of inspiration, Neil Young. This is Baskery’s first appearance at Dark Season Blues.
