Jon Gunnar Hansen, or JG Hansen as he calls himself when he takes the stage, is a local singer/songwriter who, in addition to his own songs, interprets other artists music. He has lived in Svalbard for more than 25 years, working many years in the now-closed Svea mine. Since the mine was closed, he has worked as an electrician in the now closed Mine 7 just outside Longyearbyen. In his spare time, he has played in local bands such as Howlin’ Huskies, Advent Bay Poolboys and Trio Grande.
His music is roots-based with elements of blues, Americana and rock, inspired by artists such as Jason Isbell, Bruce Springsteen and Steve Earle. Jon Gunnar was encouraged to become a solo artist by the producers of the TV series “Kompani Spitsbergen”. Last year he released the ep “Some Songs From The Mountain” with his own songs. ”A Coal Mining Problem (In A Tourist Town)” is one of several songs with a local mark.
