Dark Season Blues continues the tradition of screening a cult classic at Kulturhuset on Tuesday during festival week. Last year, it was “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”. This year, the choice fell on a film from 1989.
The films we’re screening in the run-up to the festival all feature interesting soundtracks, even though they aren’t necessarily pure music films. For a blues audience, there’s one man in particular who makes this year’s film interesting: Jeff Healey (1966–2008).
The film is about a professional bouncer, played by Patrick Swayze, who is hired to clean up the notorious Double Deuce bar in the small town of Jasper, Missouri. That presents some problems, to put it mildly. Sam Elliott plays Dalton’s friend Wade Garrett, the tough guy with the deep voice and the distinctive mustache. At the Double Deuce, it doesn’t take much for a pleasant evening to turn into a full-blown bar brawl.
An important part of the soundtrack is provided by the house band of Dalton’s friend Cody. It features the blind blues guitarist Jeff Healey and his band. You’ll also hear music by Bob Seger, Little Feat, and Kris McKay, as well as two songs by Patrick Swayze. On stage, protected by netting from bottles and other flying objects, the band continues to play while chaos unfolds in front of them.
The original soundtrack album contained only four tracks by the Jeff Healey Band. In 2024, 35 years after the film’s premiere, the album *Road House (The Lost Soundtrack) * was released, featuring all twelve Healey songs used in the film, as well as seven previously unreleased bonus tracks from the same sessions.
Welcome to an evening filled with raw guitars, bar brawls, and authentic ’80s vibes!
Due to screening rights, we cannot disclose the film’s title.
