Dark Season Youngsters (SJ)

One of Dark Season Blues’ most important recruitment initiatives is its partnership with the Longyearbyen School of Culture. Through the Blues School project, children and young people in Svalbard have the opportunity to learn the blues, develop their ensemble skills, and share the stage with professional musicians during the festival.

In the run-up to the festival, participants work on selected songs before gathering for an intensive week-long workshop with experienced festival musicians. This year’s instructors are Håkon Høye, Bill Troiani, and Alexander Pettersen, who share their experience and guide the young people through ensemble playing, improvisation, and the many expressions of the blues.

Through the rehearsals, participants gain unique insight into how professional musicians work, while also building musical confidence, collaboration skills, and stage experience. The results are presented during the festival’s official opening, where Dark Season Youngsters take the stage to showcase what they’ve been working on throughout the week.

For many of the young people, this is a highlight of the cultural school year and an inspiring encounter with musicians from the international blues scene. The project helps create new spaces for interaction between generations and gives young musicians the opportunity to play an active role in Dark Season Blues.

Dark Season Youngsters are living proof that the blues has a future even in the Arctic. Through community, learning, and the joy of playing, the next generation of musicians gets the opportunity to develop and make their mark on the world’s northernmost blues festival.
