Store Norske is the world’s northernmost mining company. With its 330 employees, Store Norske is the largest cornerstone company in Svalbard. The company is an important contributor to a stable and robust family community in Longyearbyen.
Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani AS still has its head office in Longyearbyen. SNSK is currently the parent company of the Store Norske Group and is 99.9% owned by the Norwegian state. The Group also consists of the companies Store Norske Spitsbergen Grubekompani AS (SNSG), Store Norske Gull AS and Store Norske Boliger AS.
In the past, most of the coal production took place at Longyearbyen. Today, Store Norske’s main operations take place in Svea, located 60 kilometers south of Longyearbyen. Store Norske Spitsbergen Grubekompani AS produces approximately 2 million tons of coal annually from the Svea North mine. In the area around Longyearbyen, there are only operations in Mine 7, which is located in Adventdalen, a mile and a half east of Longyearbyen and produces approximately 75,000 tons of coal a year.
Through the company Store Norske Gull AS, Store Norske operates mineral exploration on Svalbard and in Finnmark.
