Damer I Blues (NO) | Dark Season Blues

Women in Blues are Rita Engedalen and Margit Bakken. They perform beautiful covers of some of the female blues legends.

Rita and Margit met at the project “The tough ladies of the blues” led by Norwegian blues queen Kristin Berglund in 2003. After Berglund died in 2006, the two blues sisters continued the project and had countless performances together – often with other female artists as guests.

At the concerts they tell stories and perform many of their own songs, as well as familiar unfamiliar songs from some of the ladies who they have been highly influenced by in the blues, folk, soul and gospel: Bessie Smith, Memphis Minnie, Big Mama Thornton, Sister Rosetta Thorpe, Jessie Mae Hemphill and Janis Joplin.

A highlight of the concerts of both Rita and Women in Blues is “What Good Can Drinkin ‘Do”. It was the very first song Joplin recorded in 1962, six years before she released her first album, but it was not released before many years later. In Norway, it has gotten new life by two ladies in blues, Margit Bakken and Rita Engedalen.
